MSD to safeguard the Sri Lankan Cricket Team During the World cup

The April 21st will forever be remembered as a sad day, after the cowardly bombing on Easter Sunday resulting in over 250 deaths and 500+ injured.

After the attack, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated that they are working with the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well as the Ministry of Sports concerning the safety of Sri Lankan Cricket team during the world cup 2019. As a result, the sports minister, Harin Fernando has agreed to send three police officers from the Minister’s Security Division (MSD) to the United Kingdom with the team as a protection detail.

SLC requested for additional security. Hence we got the necessary approvals from the MSD to send three of their finest officers with the team. They will work closely with the security officers attached to the ICC in the World Cup. Currently, we are in no position to take any risks.  Minister said at a Press Briefing on Thursday.

It is also noted that Countries like India and Australia always travel with their own security personnel when touring overseas whereas we only relied on the security plans put forward by the host country.

ICC has a good security plan for the World Cup, but we have requested ICC to give more than they promised after the attacks on Easter Sunday. : Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO, Ashley de Silva said,

The team is set to depart for England on 07th of May.
