Sri Lanka’s Playing XI for Mali’s Final ODI

We are going to witness a historic match in Colombo RPS on 26th July 2019. Simply put, it will be an end of an era! One of the best (if not the best) pace bowlers of the past two decades will have his final laugh on the ODI stage.

Mali – the King of Yokers, the Slinga – will retire from ODIs on that day!

That sad thought aside, let us focus on the playing XI for this send-off match.

You can see the squad and the match schedule here.

This is my selection for the match:

  1. Dimuth Karunaratne (C)
  2. Niroshan Dickwella (Wk)
  3. Dhanushka Gunathilaka
  4. Avishka Fernando
  5. Angelo Mathews
  6. Kusal Janith Perera
  7. Dasun Shanaka
  8. Amila Aponso
  9. Akhila Dhananjaya
  10. Lasith Malinga
  11. Lahiru Kumara

Some (or may be most) of you may disagree, but I feel we need to have a balance between the new talent and experience. You may ask me, “Why Mathews?” Well, being the send-off for Mali, I would not mind some experience in the middle. From the next match onward, perhaps we can be a little bit more experimental.

What do you think?
